Comparative evidence

1.gʷelh₁, 1.gʷelh₂, 1.gʷelh₃

• Hitt. kuliessar 'passivity' (HED 4: 303f.)

• Hitt. kuwali-, kuli- 'calm', 'quiecent' (cf. HED 4: 303f.). Puhvel assumed that the basic meaning of this root is 'flow'. However, as was pointed out by Beal (1988), the meaning of ku(wa)li- and other cognate Hittite words is rather related to 'inactivity', 'non-productivity'. Therefore, kuwali- etc. is hardly related to OHG quellan 'well', 'spring'; one could perhaps compare the Hittite words to OIr. a-t-baill 'dies', PIE *gwelh1- 'throw'.
